2021 Annual Report for: Yponomeutidae / Yponomeutinae
For species seen in 2021 that had less than or equal to 100 records, full details are included; for more common species, the earliest, latest and highest count by vice-county are shown. The narrative for each species is taken from the main Hantsmoths website, and it is possible that some information on abundance and occurrence can get out of date, as it is impossible to keep up with all changes; however it should give a good introduction to each species. The tables in each species account summarise the previous status, and that for the current year.
For the maps, all records prior to 2021 are shown by a blue dot (the larger the dot, the more recent), with the current year's records shown in red. As previous records are superimposed on any report for 2021, new sites have greater emphasis (i.e. will show as 'more red').
In the species accounts, an asterisk next to a location indicates a new 10km square record; earliest ever dates are highlighted in orange, and latest ever in red. 16.001 [B&F: 0424] Bird-cherry Ermine Yponomeuta evonymella (Linnaeus, 1758) - Common
Common in woodland and scrub throughout much of the British Isles, more numerous in the north. Given that the foodplant is not native and uncommon in southern England, and it is likely that most specimens taken in southern England are immigrants. In Hampshire and Isle of Wight recorded numbers vary widely year on year, with 2013 seeing a notable influx of over 300 individuals, with 2018 being another good year. Wingspan 19-25 mm. Larva feeds on Bird Cherry, living gregariously within a silken web.

16.002 [B&F: 0425] Orchard Ermine Yponomeuta padella (Linnaeus, 1758) - Common
Common in hedgerows and scrubland throughout the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight widespread and sometimes common, especially as larvae. Wingspan 19-22 mm. Very difficult to separate from Apple Ermine Y. malinellus, but normally the greyish cilia of the forewing distinguish Orchard Ermine from Apple Ermine, while the grey suffusion in the ground colour of the forewing separates Orchard Ermine from Spindle Ermine Y. cagnagella; Willow Ermine Y. rorrella has a slightly different pattern to the grey suffusion of the forewing (MBGBI Vol 3). Larva feeds on Blackthorn and Hawthorn, living gregariously in communal webs.

16.003 [B&F: 0426] Apple Ermine Yponomeuta malinellus Zeller, 1838 - Local
Local in orchards throughout much of Britain as far north as the central lowlands of Scotland, but less common than formerly, probably because of the extensive use of insecticides (MBGBI Vol 3). Widespread at low numbers across Hampshire and Isle of Wight, but there can be limited confidence about the accuracy of many records as the adult moth cannot be reliably differentiated from Y. padella as an imago: although Orchard Ermine Y. padella is normally greyish while the present species has a white ground colour to the forewing, but the two species only reliably separated with reference to the larval foodplant. Specimens should be recorded as Yponomeuta padella/malinellus agg., unless it is made clear that they were recorded as an occupied larval web or reared from the relevant larval foodplant. Larva feeds on Apple, living gregariously within a silken web.

16.004 [B&F: 0427] Spindle Ermine Yponomeuta cagnagella (Hübner, [1813]) - Common
Common wherever the foodplant occurs, on calcareous soils throughout the British Isles, less so in the north and not recorded north of Aberdeen (MBGBI Vol 3). In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight fairly common and widely distributed. Wingspan 19-26 mm. Distinguished from Orchard Ermine Y. padella and Apple Ermine Y. malinellus by the white forewings with white terminal cilia. Larva feeds on Spindle and, in gardens, Evergreen Spindle, living gregariously within a silken web.

16.005 [B&F: 0428] Willow Ermine Yponomeuta rorrella (Hübner, 1796) - Local
As a resident, favours coastal locations in southern and eastern counties, where the food plants occur, but most frequently encountered as a migrant, when it can be abundant; as such, there are numerous records from South Hampshire, but less frequent in the north. Surprisingly, un-recorded on the Isle of Wight until 2012, when a major influx saw 8 individuals reported, and has been annual since.
Wingspan 19-24 mm. Very difficult to separate from Orchard Ermine Y. padella and Apple Ermine Y. malinellus, but grey wash generally restricted to dorsal half of forewing: if this is not clear, then records need to be aggregated as 'Yponomeuta sp.' Larva feeds on White Willow and Goat Willow, living gregariously within a silken web.

Vulnerable (proposed as a future Red Data Book species) and recorded only from woodland on chalky soils in parts of Hampshire and Kent. Very local and occasional in Hampshire, but not in recent years in the north; in southern Hampshire, recorded in numbers on The Moors Local Nature Reserve, Bishop's Waltham, in 2001, otherwise there has been just one other record this century. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 19-25 mm. Larva feeds on Spindle, living within a silken web.

Local in woodland on chalky soils throughout England, Wales and southern Ireland. Widespread and fairly common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 17-19 mm. One of the more distinctive Yponomeuta, distinguished by the small black spot in the centre of the forewing. Larva feeds on Spindle, living within a silken web.

Local in woodland, rocky areas and hedgerows in England and Wales, as far north as Lincolnshire and Worcestershire; also recorded from Northumberland (MBGBI Vol 3). In Hampshire widespread in the south of the county, but very local in the north; there have been no recent records from the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 15-18 mm. One of the more distinctive Yponomeuta, distinguished by the grey head, pale grey wing and lack of dots in the terminal area. Most likely to be confused with darker individuals of Y.padella. Larva feeds on Orpine, living gregariously within a silken web, over-wintering as a pupa.

16.014 [B&F: 0436] Pseudoswammerdamia combinella (Hübner, 1786) - Common
Common in hedgerows and scrub throughout the British Isles. The distribution in Hampshire mirrors those areas in which trapping effort is concentrated, and the moth is probably more widely distributed than the records suggest; very infrequently recorded from the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 13-16 mm. Distinguished from the various Swammerdamia species by the dark-bordered orange spot on the wing-tip, and the rows of fine longitudinal dashes along the length of the forewing. Larva mines the foliage of Blackthorn, subsequently living within a silken web, often several together, over-wintering as a pupa in a cocoon.

Common in heathland and open woodland throughout much of the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight common wherever birch occurs. Wingspan 9-13 mm. Larva feeds on Silver Birch and Downy Birch, beneath a silken web, over-wintering as a pupa in a cocoon.

16.017 [B&F: 0438] Swammerdamia pyrella (Villers, 1789) - Common
Common in hedgerows, woodland, orchards and gardens throughout most of the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight increasingly recorded in recent years, although it is unclear whether this is due to increased observer coverage or a real growth in population. Wingspan 10-13 mm. Apart from S. passerella, which occurs only in the Scottish Highlands and which is separable only by dissection of the genitalia, S. pyrella is distinguished from all other Swammerdamia and Pseudoswammerdamia species by the coppery terminal cilia, small size and dark appearance (MBGBI Vol 3). Larva feeds on Hawthorn, Apple and Pear, beneath a silken web, over-wintering as a pupa in a cocoon.

16.019 [B&F: 0440] Paraswammerdamia albicapitella (Scharfenberg, 1805) - Common
Common in hedgerows and scrub throughout much of the British Isles, as far north as the central lowlands of Scotland, where it is local and scarce (MBGBI Vol 3). In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight the majority of the records are from the extreme south-east of the county, and perhaps under-recorded elsewhere, although largely absent from the New Forest. Wingspan 10-13 mm. Larva mines leaves of Blackthorn, subsequently living within a silken web, often several together.

16.020 [B&F: 0441] Paraswammerdamia nebulella (Goeze, 1783) - Common
Common in hedgerows and open woodland throughout the British Isles, but not in the north. The distribution in Hampshire mirrors those areas in which trapping effort is concentrated, and the moth is probably more widely distributed than the records suggest; only recorded once on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 11-14 mm. Characterised by the absence of distinguishing field characteristics, predominately grey, with a white head. Larva mines leaves of Hawthorn, Rowan and Dog Rose, subsequently living within a silken web, often several together.

Local in pine woodland throughout the British Isles. In Hampshire regularly recorded from just handful of sites, including West Walk, Wickham, with a scattering of records elsewhere, but probably under-recorded. First recorded from the Isle of Wight in 2015. Wingspan 9-11 mm. Larva mines needles of Scots Pine.
