Local on moorland, heathland and in mountains throughout much of the British Isles, but rare in southern England. In Hampshire formerly uncommon on the heaths of the New Forest and north-east Hampshire, but now virtually restricted to a single site near Oakhanger. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 17-25 mm. The largest of the British Olethreutines, O. schulziana is further distinguished by the bright ferruginous-brown coloration of the forewing markings contrasting with the narrow bands of silvery white ground colour, the small but conspicuous white spot at the upper angle of the cell, and the chequered cilia [Bradley]. Larva feeds on Heather and Cranberry, living within a silken tube or tent.
