Classification

Family:Tortricidae
Subfamily:Olethreutinae
Genus:Phiaris
Species:metallicana
Authority:(Hübner, [1799])

Vulnerable (proposed as a future Red Data Book species) on moorland and in mountains in the Scottish Highlands, typically at 200-300 m above sea level. Unlikely to be recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 17-22 mm. The drab olive-brown coloration and generally poorly defined markings are characteristic; differs from O. obsoletana by the broader, less angulate forewing and the broader and more evenly edged median fascia; well-marked specimens may be confused with Celypha lacunana, but in the latter the subterminal fascia of the forewing is narrow and comparatively well defined and extends into the cilia [Bradley]. Larva feeds on Bilberry, living within a spun or rolled leaf.
