Classification

Family:Noctuidae
Subfamily:Cuculliinae
Genus:Valeria
Species:oleagina
Authority:([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)

Occurrence in the British Isles unconfirmed, this central European species is included on the British list on the basis of an individual flying at dusk along hedges near Fishguard, Pembrokeshire, in July 1800. However, the moth flies only in March and April elsewhere in Europe, so this record appears to be in error. Other alleged British specimens are associated with the unreliable dealer Plastead, who appears to have fabricated details of their capture (MBGBI Vol 10). Wingspan 38-42 mm. Larva feeds on Hawthorn and Blackthorn, no evidence of breeding in the UK.
