Common in broad-leaved woodland, scrub, gardens and moorland throughout the British Isles. Widespread and still reasonably common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 32-38 mm. Straight costa and spring emergence eliminates all but
White-marked C. leucographa, which differs most obviously in pale orbicular and reniform stigmata. Larva feeds on various herbaceous and woody plants, over-wintering as a pupa.
