Very rare immigrant (less than 10 previous UK records) from gardens and farmland in eastern Europe, appearing for the first time in Britain in a light-trap at Denholm, Roxburghshire on 29 August 1976, a time of much migrant activity, with no further records to date. Not recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 35-40 mm. Main confusion species is
Dark Brocade B. adusta. Larva feeds on roots and lower stems of herbaceous plants, causing sufficient damage to be a serious pest in some areas; no evidence of breeding in the UK.
