Very rare immigrant (less than 10 previous UK records) from northern Europe, appearing in Britain on three occasions: at Porthkerry, Glamorgan, in ca. 1887; at West Norwood, Surrey, in July 1972; and at Bexley, Kent, in July 1972. Not recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 45-56 mm. Larva feeds on roots of various grasses, including Sheep's-fescue, Tufted Hair-grass and Wavy Hair-grass, no evidence of breeding in the UK.
