As a breeding species, very rare in grassland and along the edges of woodland nowadays confiend to a few sites in Kent, in particular at Folkestone Warren and Hamstreet, and West Sussex. Also occurring increasingly as an immigrant from mainland Europe on the southern coast of England. On the Isle of Wight, one was taken at Freshwater in August 1994 (and another in 2015), followed by to date the only Hampshire record, on Hayling Island in 2014. Another Isle of Wight specimen was recorded in Bonchurch in 2019. Wingspan 29-34 mm. The angled cross-lines are characteristic, although could be confused with the much smaller
Rosy Wave S. emutaria. Larva feeds on Smooth Tare, Tormentil and Traveller's-joy.
