Common in woodland edges, grassland, hedgerows and roadside verges; 0-800 m (0-1600 m in Europe) throughout much of the British Isles; Fennoscandia and mainland Europe. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight widespread and common. Wingspan 40-48 mm. Larva feeds on Tufted Hair-grass, Common Couch and Annual Meadow-grass.
