Rare in coniferous woodland and plantations in parts of England and northern Ireland. Not reliably recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 11-13 mm. Similar in coloration to
E. nanana but larger and differs in the basal patch of the forewing; in
E. nanana the outer edge is angulated below the middle, whereas in
E. nigricana the angulation is above the middle [Bradley]. Larva mines buds of European Silver-fir.
