Nationally scarce (Nb) in woodland and waste ground in parts of England and Wales, mainly in the south and south-east. In Hampshire recorded very rarely away from Botley Wood, and there have been no recent records from the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 9-13 mm. The general coloration of the forewing is darker than in
E. pullana, with which it has been thoroughly confused in the past; further distinguished by the darker hindwing and cilia [Bradley]. Larva feeds on Bugle.
