Nationally scarce (Na) on moorland and damp woodland throughout much of the British Isles. In Hampshire the few records are from the New Forest, where it is undoubtedly resident, and there is one old record from the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 17-24 mm. The not uncommon almost unicolorous purplish brown form f. purpurana closely resembles f. sudoriana of A. lipsiana, but differs in the comparatively narrow forewing with more prominent apex, the usually pronounced whitish suffusion on the costal margin, and the distinct reddish brown terminal line [Bradley]. Larva feeds on Bog-myrtle, White Poplar, Goat Willow, Meadowsweet and similar.
