Local in open woodland and hedgerows throughout parts of England and Wales. In Hampshire widespread in the past in the south-east, but with very few recent records, elsewhere there are just a few widely scattered records, including a few in the north of the county and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 10-14.5 mm. The blackish triangular costal mark separates this species from all other Caryocolum species; Scrobipalpa costella has a similar costal mark, but does not have an orange-ochreous dorsal area (MBGBI Vol 4 part 2). Larva mines leaves of Greater Stitchwort, subsequently living within a spinning.
