Rare on heathland in the south and south-east of England, from Hampshire and Kent northwards to Suffolk. According to Goater (1974), recorded from Lyndhurst, New Forest in 1967 and on Abbotstone Down in 1964 (a record from Browndown in 1969 was subsequently determined to be unreliable). Not recorded from the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 13-15 mm. The most likely confusion species is N. peliella, which see for differences. Larva feeds on Sheep's Sorrel, living within a silken tube or tent.
