A rare species of shingle beaches restricted to a few sites in Kent, and recently, somewhat surprisingly, in Middlesex. Two historical submissions for east Dorset (VC11) were in error, but a specimen was recorded at a BENHS field session in 2015 on Sandy Point, Hayling Island. Wingspan 13-16 mm. The most likely confusion species is
N. singula which has the black spots at two-fifths vertically one above the other; in
N. peliella the lower spot is usually slightly basad of the upper spot;
N. singula has a dusting of dull yellowish white scales on the more greyish fuscous-tinged forewing, making it paler than
N. peliella (MBGBI Vol 4 part 2). Larva feeds on Sheep's Sorrel, living within a silken tube or tent.
