Common in woodland, plantations, parklands and urban areas throughout much of England and Wales. Widespread and common in Hampshire but rather scarce on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 9-11 mm. Most likely to be confused with
B. lambdella, which is mainly restricted to the coast, and
B. internella, which is very restricted in its range; see these species accounts for details. Larva feeds on lichens growing on trees, fence posts, and in rotten wood under the bark.
