Nationally scarce (Nb) in freshwater margins throughout England and Wales; rare in Ireland. Extremely rare in Hampshire, far from annual, and never in numbers. Recorded from the Isle of Wight for the first time on 26 July 2016 when two were beaten from Alder at Afton Marsh. Wingspan 7.4-8.8 mm. Superficially resembles a number of other Nepticulidae, but combination of orange head, dark copper-coloured collar, white-tipped, fuscous antennae, pale yellow eyecaps, and shining coppery purple forewing with yellowish spots on costa and dorsum beyond middle, is diagnostic (MBGBI Vol 1). Day-flying. Larva mines buds of Alder.
