Common in bogs, scrubland and tundra; 100-2500 m, low altitudes in the north throughout much of Fennoscandia and north-eastern Europe. One was found in West Sussex in 1923, having been caught up in an influx of other immigrant butterflies. Not recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 50 mm. Larva feeds on Bog Bilberry.
