Local on moorland, upland scrub and open woodland, from Warwickshire, Shropshire and central Wales to Sutherland. Between 26 August and 9 September 1954 about 20 were caught in scattered places in south-east and central England, and several more were reported near the coasts of Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Cumbria in September 1973 and late August 1976, all of which were immigrants, probably from Germany. In Hampshire there is but a single record of this scarce immigrant, from Burghclere in 1954. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 45-40 mm. Larva feeds on Heather, Bilberry, Cowberry, Bearberry, Bog-myrtle, Creeping Willow and Silver Birch, over-wintering as an egg.
