A rare Red Data Book species, in fens and ancient woodland in parts of south-eastern England, also appearing as a migrant in southern England, a priority species under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. Originally thought to be confined to fenland in Cambridgeshire, has been found to be more widespread than previously thought, with isolated colonies in Lincolnshire, Huntingdonshire and Leicestershire. A few presumed migrants have been recorded in Sussex (1957), Suffolk (1966) and Essex (1980). Not recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 26-28 mm. In pale forms of Mere Wainscot C. fluxa the hindwing is paler than the forewing and the reniform stigma is clearer, with a dark dorsal dot (MBGBI Vol 10). Larva feeds on Purple Small-reed and Wood Small-reed.
