Local on moorland, unimproved grassland and sand-dunes, widespread in Scotland and northern England, and in mid- and western Wales. Unlikely to be recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 29-35 mm. Can resemble both
Large Ear A. lucens and
Ear Moth A. oculea, from which separated only by dissection of the genitalia. Larva feeds on roots and lower stems of Yellow Iris, over-wintering as an egg.
