Hantsmoths

Extinct in the British Isles, formerly confined to south-eastern England, where it was most frequently noted from Sussex and Kent; also known from Hampshire, Surrey and Essex. Although there have been no recent records from these counties, there was a record from Oxfordshire in the 1970s, which indicates that the species may have ranged further to the north than had previously been thought (MBGBI Vol 10). In Hampshire larvae found in Botley Wood in 1941 and 1944, are the only records of this species in the county. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 38-44 mm. Larva feeds on flowers and leaves of Goldenrod, no evidence of breeding in the UK.
