Common in woodland, scrub, parks and gardens throughout the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight locally common, mainly in the south west. Wingspan 40-50 mm. The main confusion species is Maple Prominent P. cucullina, which is smaller, paler and has a white subterminal line and white subterminal fascia (MBGBI Vol 9). Larva feeds on various broad-leaved trees, including Birch, Hazel, Alder, Aspen, Sallow, Hawthorn, Lime, Oak, Beech and Rowan, over-wintering as a pupa.
