Common in open woodland, mature hedgerows, scrubby heathland, moorland and grassland throughout much of England, Wales and western Scotland. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight still widespread in all three vice-counties but surely much less common than formerly. Wingspan 23-26 mm. The most likely confusion species is
Small Grass Emerald Chlorissa viridata, which see for differences. Larva feeds on Downy Birch, Silver Birch, Hazel, Hawthorn and Blackthorn, over-wintering as a pupa.
