Common in woodland and hedgerows, moorland and heathland, calcareous grassland, parks and gardens throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 43-56 mm. The main confusion species is
Willow Beauty Peribatodes rhomboidaria, which differs principally in the two cross-line, converging at the dorsum in Willow Beauty, but not in Mottled Beauty. Larva polyphagous on a great many woody plants, including Oak, Birch, Ash, Hawthorn, Honeysuckle and Juniper.
