Common in gardens, hedgerows, roadside verges, grassland, fens and open woodland throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 20-24 mm. Nominate form simple to identify with large copper-coloured patch, form cognata, more common in northern populations, has much reduced copper-coloured patch and several cross-lines. Larva feeds on Yarrow and Sneezewort, over-wintering as a pupa.
