Rare immigrant from mainland Europe and subtropical regions, recorded in most months of the year throughout the British Isles, predominantly on the south coast. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight a very scarce immigrant, recorded in spring and autumn, occasionally inland, but mostly on the coast. The individual pictured is the 13th county record, and the first since 1998, and was caught in a period of exceptional migrant activity along the south coast. Wingspan 16-27 mm. This species is distinguished from other British pyralids by the pale coloration and terminal band of black and metallic spots [Goater]. Larva feeds on dry vegetable matter, dried goods, cereals and grain, but there is no evidence of breeding in the UK.
