Nationally scarce (Na) in open woodland on chalky soils in parts of England and Wales, more numerous in the south. In Hampshire it is very scarce, with scattered and infrequent records across the chalk, predominantly at Oxenbourne Down, Sparsholt and Broughton Down, and not recently. Not reliably recorded from the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 25-29 mm. The most likely confusion species are Sitochroa verticalis and female European Corn Borer Ostrinia nubilalis, from which separated by bordered appearance of fore- and, especially, hind-wing. Larva feeds on Wood Sage, Wild Marjoram, Goldenrod, Black Horehound, Wild Thyme, Corn Mint and Stinging Nettle.
