Classification

Family:Pyralidae
Subfamily:Phycitinae
Genus:Cryptoblabes
Species:gnidiella
Authority:(Millière, 1867)

Recorded infrequently through accidental importation in oranges and pomegranates from southern Europe and usually discovered as larvae in fruit purchased from supermarkets, although occasionally adults are taken at light. In Hampshire the best chance of finding this species appears to be in pomegranates from a supermarket in Winchester, but equally likely to turn up almost anywhere. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 11-20 mm. Another casual in supermarket fruit, Euzophera bigella, has cross-lines not as far apart and much more strongly developed towards dorsum, and first line nearer to middle of wing [Goater]. Larva feeds on fruit trees, causing sufficient damage to be a serious pest in some areas; no evidence of breeding in the UK.
