Common in flower meadows, maquis and hillsides throughout much of mainland Europe and Fennoscandia.
A male was captured in Torquay in Devon in September 1936. Being non-migratory, with a normal flight period from May to June, there must be doubt over the natural provenance of this specimen.
Wingspan 35 mm. Larva feeds on Broom, Lucerne, Tufted Vetch, Crown Vetch and Sainfoin, subsequently living underground where attended by ants.
