An endangered Red Data Book species, in deciduous woodland and areas with scattered trees; 100-400 m (100-1300 m in Europe) in parts of southern England and Wales, with records north to Yorkshire; mainland Europe and southern Scandinavia. In Hampshire there are colonies in a few places such as Bentley Wood and Stockbridge Down. Intermittently recorded from the Isle of Wight, where less than annual in occurrence. Wingspan 36 mm. Larva feeds on Wych Elm.
