A vulnerable Red Data Book species, protected under the UK Wildlife and Countryside Act, and a priority species under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan, in water meadows, damp grassland and chalk downland; 50-300 m (0-2600 m in Europe) in parts of western Britain and Ireland; mainland Europe. In Hampshire can still be found at Martin Down and one or two other sites in the county, but very uncommon on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 42-48 mm. Larva feeds on Devil's-bit Scabious, Honeysuckle, Small Scabious and Gentian.
