Common in woodland edges, hedgerows and gardens; 0-500 m (0-2000 m in Europe) throughout much of southern England and Wales; mainland Europe and Fennoscandia. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight widespread and common, having increased over the last hundred years. Wingspan 55-60 mm. Larva feeds on Stinging Nettle, Small Nettle, Hop, Wych Elm and English Elm.
