Local on rough grassland, downland, sea cliffs, undercliffs, sand-dunes and moorland; 0-400 m (0-2200 m in Europe) throughout much of the British Isles; mainland Europe and Fennoscandia. In Hampshire most likely to be seen on Martin Down and Old Winchester Hill, and on the Isle of Wight at Mottistone and Tennyson Down. Wingspan 63-69 mm. Best distinguished from
High Brown Fritillary by pattern on underside of the hindwing. Larva feeds on Common Dog-violet, Marsh Violet and Hairy Violet.
