Hantsmoths

Common in deciduous woodland, hedgerows and woodland clearings throughout much of southern England, Wales and Ireland; mainland Europe and southern Scandinavia. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight the most common fritillary, widespread in the New Forest, and likely to be seen in most undisturbed woods in the county. Population density has increased in recent decades and it has extended its range, probably as a result of climate change.

The form valesina occurs in a small percentage of females, primarily in the larger colonies in the south of England, with the orange-brown colouring is replaced with a deep olive-green.

Wingspan 72-76 mm. Larva feeds on Common Dog-violet.
