A vulnerable Red Data Book species, in quarries, sand-dunes, heaths and damp grassland; 0-600 m (0-2000 m in Europe) in parts of the British Isles; mainland Europe and southern Scandinavia. In Hampshire still reasonably common in the New Forest and on the heaths in the north-east of the county and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 55-60 mm. Larva feeds on Bristle Bent, Sheep's-fescue, Marram-grass and Common Couch.
