Common in woodland clearings; 0-1800 m throughout much of Fennoscandia and south-eastern Europe. In Britain, first recorded on Arran in 1803 and found in the past in collections of
Scotch Argus, but not seen in Britain for many years. Unlikely to be recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 48-54 mm. Larva feeds on Wood Sedge.
