Common in rough grassland, scrub, hedgerows, roadside verges and damp woodland; 0-600 m (0-2500 m in Europe) throughout much of England, Wales and Ireland; mainland Europe and Scandinavia. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight widespread and common. Wingspan 52-60 mm. Larva feeds on Buckthorn and Alder Buckthorn.
