Common in gardens, market gardens, allotments, farmland and woodland edges; 0-800 m (0-3000 m in Europe) throughout much of the British Isles, arriving as a migrant in significant numbers in some years; mainland Europe and Fennoscandia. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight widespread and common. Wingspan 46-55 mm. Larva feeds on Cabbage, Brussels Sprouts, Nasturtium and similar, causing sufficient damage to be a serious pest in some areas.
