Nationally scarce (Nb) in damp pastures, river-banks and ditches in parts of the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight the only recent records are from Itchen Abbas and Alverstone. Wingspan 16-22 mm. Differs from E. grandaevana by its generally smaller size, ciliate antennae, the darker general coloration of the wings and the presence of a weak ocellus on the forewing [Bradley]. Larva feeds within roots and lower stems of Butterbur.
