Vulnerable (proposed as a future Red Data Book species) in woodland, gardens and parks in parts of England, Wales and southern Ireland. In Hampshire known in the past from two localities in southern Hampshire - Havant Thicket and Parnholt Wood - where it was formerly common amongst Giant Fir, but there have been no reports since 1998. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 11-13 mm. Both sexes of this species differ from E. pygmaeana by the more extensively infuscate hindwing and the presence of a weak ocellus in the forewing; the antenna of the male of E. subsequana is not biciliate-fasciculate [Bradley]. Larva feeds on Norway Spruce, European Silver-fir and Giant Fir, living between needles spun together with silk, over-wintering as a pupa.
