Hantsmoths

Vulnerable (proposed as a future Red Data Book species) on limestone downland and sand-dunes in parts of southern England, southern Wales and southern Ireland. Not recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 15-20 mm. Distinguished from A. variegana by the comparatively rich pale ochreous and reddish ochreous coloration, the generally less variegated wing pattern in which the costal blotch is not developed as in some forms of A. variegana, and the large recumbent scale-tuft in the submedian fold, which in A. variegana is erect [Bradley]. Larva feeds on Burnet Rose, living within a spun or rolled leaf, over-wintering as an egg.
