Hantsmoths

Extinct in the British Isles, formerly on boggy heathland near King's Lynn, Norfolk. Unlikely to be recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan male 18-22 mm, female 20-24 mm. The male of this species may be confused with well-marked forms of the male of Sparganothis pilleriana, and the almost unicolorous fuscous-brown form of the female with similar dark females of that species; the exceptionally long labial palpi of S. pilleriana readily separate the two species [Bradley]. Larva feeds on Bog-myrtle, living between leaves and shoots spun together with silk, over-wintering as a small larva.
