Local in woodland, parks, gardens and hedgerows throughout much of Britain, except for the Scottish Highlands; rare in Ireland. In Hampshire, due to the focus of fieldwork, many records have originated from Fareham to Havant, with an outlying record from Brockenhurst in 1977; further north there are scattered records up to Pamber on the Berkshire border. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight since 1947. Wingspan 12-15 mm. The most likely confusion species is Carpatolechia notatella, which see for differences. Larva feeds on Elm, living between leaves spun together with silk, over-wintering as an egg.
