Rare on dry grassy slopes on the Dorset coast, between Portland and Kimmeridge. Not recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 12-18 mm. The most likely confusion species are H. rufescens and Brachmia inornatella, which see for differences. Larva feeds within leaves of Cock's-foot, False-brome, Tor-grass, Common Couch and other grasses.
