Local in fens, marshes, damp woodland, woodland rides and by river-banks throughout much of England, Wales and southern Scotland; also in south-western and north-eastern Ireland. In Hampshire locally common in Botley Wood, and probably under-recorded elsewhere, but not recorded from the Isle of Wight in recent years. Wingspan 15-19 mm. The most likely confusion species are A. assimilella and A. astrantiae, which see for differences. Larva feeds on shoots and leaves of Wild Angelica, Milk-parsley and Hogweed, living gregariously within a silken web.
