In continental Europe, reasonably common throughout. A species of damp woodland, where the larva occurs from September till next spring on decayed wood, under bark etc. The adults fly from June till August and come to light. New to the British list in 2011, when it was discovered, somewhat surprisingly, in urban Berkshire. Subsequently it has turned up in Sussex, and as an adventive on imported timber, can be expected to spread in our country. An unmistakable species.
