Hantsmoths

Rare (proposed as a future Red Data Book species) but numerous where it occurs, in woodland, marshes, river-banks and freshwater margins in Middlesex, south Essex and Cambridgeshire. Not recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan male 6.2-8.4 mm, female 6.0-7.8 mm. Easy to confuse with E. hannoverella, but in female the blunt ovipositor of E. hannoverella separates it immediately from E. turbidella, which has a pointed ovipositor; males with light heads can only be separated by dissection of the genitalia. E. hannoverella and E. turbidella are separated from other Ectoedemia by the presence of a white discal spot in basal part of forewing and many scattered white scales (MBGBI Vol 1). Larva mines leaves of Grey Poplar, over-wintering as a pupa.
