Local in woodland, gardens, orchards and parks in south-eastern England, from Kent to Cambridgeshire and Somerset. Distribution in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight poorly known owing to confusion with
E. sericopeza, but recorded for the first time in vice-county 12 only in 1996. Wingspan 5-8 mm. Very similar to
E. sericopeza, which see for differences. Larva mines samara of Field Maple.
The specimen illustrated here is assumed to be this species (over 0021
E. sericopeza). The latter mines Norway Maple, with the present species on the more common Field Maple; outwardly, the two species are very similar, and historically there has been great confusion between the two.
