A rare Red Data Book species, in long-established birch woodland, in the Scottish Highlands. Virtually confined to the Rannoch area, upper Spey valley, Glen Moriston and Glen Affric; attempts to find colonies further north in apparently suitable terrain have been unsuccessful. The Spey Valley around Aviemore is a traditional stronghold. It has also been confirmed recently, after a 40-year interval, in sites in Glen Affric and Glen Moriston. In central Scotland known only from a limited area at Rannoch (MBGBI Vol 10). Unlikely to be recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 44-60 mm. Larva feeds on Silver Birch and Downy Birch, over-wintering as a pupa.
